Unlike other breeds of dogs, basenjis have a breeding season, and all the litters are born in the winter, usually in November, December or January.
This year, we have 3 litters of Suddanly/Sunbird Basenjis all born in November. As always, the parents are carefully chosen for health, temperament and conformation. Their pedigrees are studied for qualities and possible problems for many generations. We strive to produce basenjis that will not only make wonderful pets, but that will be a asset to the breed.
All our basenjis are health tested and clear of genetic diseases. For more information on inherited diseases in basenjis, please visit the Basenji Club of America website on the LINKS page.
All pet puppies are sold on limited registration with a spay-neuter contract and life-time health guarantee for $800.00. Show puppy contracts will be discussed on an individual basis. Health information on all the parents is available upon request.
Maggie, Suddanly Magnolia Blossom was bred to Andy, Aus. Gr. Ch. Am. DC Suddanly On The Cover of GQ, SC, ET. Maggie is co-owned with Bill Sullivan and is pointed in the ring and in the field. She is the daugher of FC Sunbird Sudnly Follow the Lady, SC "TC", and PJ's Kenset Back To the Future "Marty". This breeding will combines Kenset, Suddanly, Tamsala and Esenjo lines, all known for great health and temperament. Maggie had one brindle girl, one red boy and 2 brindle boys on November 19, 2009.
Mercedes, DC Suddanly Lady Behind D'Wheel, FCh, SC was bred to Song, Ch. Jerlin's Songster, owned by Toni Ackerman. These pups should also be pretty impressive with many top winning and coursing dogs in the pedigree. Mercedes gave birth on Thanksgiving morning to a black and white girl, a tri girl, a tri boy and 2 red boys.
Viv, Suddanly Imara's Vivace, is pointed in the ring and on the field. She was bred to DC Sunbird Suddanly Stetson, FCh, aka Teddy. We are expecting brindles and red and whites out of this litter. Again, this will be a combination of Kenset, Tamsala, Suddanly and Esenjo bloodlines. If these pups are anything like their parents, they should be the most easy-going, amiable basenjis you could ever find! Viv's pups were born on November 27, 2009. She had 1 red boy, 2 red girls and 3 brindle boys.
Most Suddanly pups are sold before they are weaned. If you are interested, in providing a loving and exceptional home for one of these puppies, please contact us. You are also welcome to come visit. Call or write and we will set up a time. At this time, only one brindle male is still available.
We do not allow any perspective buyers to reserve a specific puppy. All the puppies will be evaluated at 7 or 8 weeks. The show quality puppies will be determined at that time. The pet puppies will be matched with their future owners with consideration to the future owners' preferences for sex and color. More importantly, the personality of the pup will will be matched with the needs and personality of the perspective owner.
UPDATES
All the pups are growing well and getting very fat. They are still not very interesting. Basenji pups look like generic baby puppies until they are 3-4 weeks old and on their feet. Then their ears start to stand up and their tails start to curl over their backs. The puppies' eyes and ears are starting to open, although they won't be able to see or hear until they are 21 days old.
Baby basenjis have puppy coats that are more dull than their adult color will be. The reds are mousy grayish red. The brindles' stripes are not as visible or clear. But soon their true colors will show through.
On January 15, I transformed the back of my Caravan into a high security basenji puppy pen and transported 14 pups down to visit Mary Lou Kenworthy in GA. We all had a great time. The pups were evaluated and matched up with their new owners. They ran and played and ate and pooped (on the papers) of course. We were kept very busy running after pups and keeping them out of things that we discovered we had not adequately puppy proofed in spite of our decades of experience! Basenji pups will always surprise you. All the pups handled the trip and the new surrroundings and people without hesitation.
At this time, BB is available to a special home. Check out the new pictures below.
2009 Puppy Pictures
As you look at the puppy picture galleries below, you need to know that although puppies' eyes open at about 2 weeks, they are still cloudy and the puppy is not getting much input from their eyes until they are 3 weeks old. So Andy and Maggie's puppies look much more mature and move around a lot more than the other litters do. In a few more weeks, we will have individual posed pictures of all the puppies, but I always enjoy setting up the pictures when the pups are this young. Enjoy.
OTHER POSSIBILITIES
Not all households can take the time needed to raise a puppy. Frequently, we have adults that are already housebroken and crate trained available. If you would like a basenji, but find the idea of raising a very active puppy daunting, check the SEEKING HOMES page for some "golden opportunities".
